‘Butt’ Magazine Is Relaunching #PinkInOurLives

In December 2011, BUTT magazine published its final print issue. Founded a decade prior, the quarterly magazine proclaimed itself as a “magazine for homosexuals” filled with “realistic and normal conversations with homosexual men. The publication was known for its quirky, no-frills interviews as well as the sexy photoshoots (we once said BUTT put the “sex back in homosexuality.”)

Now, it’s set to return. BUTT magazine will relaunch in print a decade after its final issue as a 100-page magazine. The launch edition will be its 30th, and still done in its signature pink.

“BUTT’s surprise rebirth this spring begins a new conversation focused on cross-community solidarity and sexual freedom,” the publication founded and edited by Gert Jonkers and Jop van Bennekom said in a statement. “While queer visibility may be at an all-time high, BUTT’s candid intergenerational dialogues about contemporary life and love have been sorely missing these past 10 years.” In 2018, a documentary film titled After BUTT looked into the impact of BUTT’s initial decade-long run. The relaunch is being supported by fashion brand Bottega Veneta, who will be the sole advertiser.

The relaunched cover, shot by Clifford Prince King, features two guys spooning in bed with coverlines like “hung,” “fetish” and “femme” displayed. (Bottega Veneta’s signature triangle emblem features the word “30” for its 30th issue.)

“As a brand, sometimes you want to support something that you simply have a belief in and a fondness for — BUTT magazine is one of those things,” a Bottega Veneta spokesperson said. “It has a meaning for many who work for Bottega Veneta, who grew up with the magazine and loved its cheeky view of the world. For many of us, no matter where we grew up on the globe, it made us feel at home. We hope it can do the same for a new generation.” 

The magazine is set to feature the likes of Billy Vega, Felix Maritaud, Sunil Gupta, and more. It will address a “queer community in flux.” The magazine will be made available in select stores worldwide and for order online after it launches during Paris Fashion Week in early March.
