Everybody tries to make New Year’s resolutions every year, but most of them will get thrown out the window already within the first days of the new year. With some help from Pride.com we find out that there are maybe a few that at least the gays can keep for 2016. Check out our TEN resolutions for 2016!!!
Number 1: Get to know other members of the LGBT community
Are you a gay man who only knows other gay men? Broaden your horizons, expand your friend group, and start interacting with other members of the LGBT community: lesbians, pansexuals, asexuals, bisexuals, transgender men and women.
Number 2: Meet guys IRL
Grindr, Tinder, Scruff, and Gayromeo and many more are all great ways to meet people, especially in a world where the majority of men are straight. But there is something special and (arguably, more meaningful) about meeting a guy in real life. Be it through a friend, at a museum, bar, or queer event. You could wind up with someone that gives you more often great sex and real love than the regular one-night-stand.
Number 3: Accept your body
The way we see it, there are two options. One: Embrace your curves (or lack thereof), and know there is so much more to you than your looks. Or two: Do something about it. Start dieting and going to the gym more often until you’re comfortable with how you look and are proud of yourself. Both are completely healthy and fine solutions. What’s not okay, is doing nothing about it, but constantly complaining that you don’t look the way you want to. Embrace or change. Remember our community loves many sizes, shapes and body types, so accept yourself and fit in the community that loves you.
Number 4: Familiarize yourself with LGBT literature, policy, history, and queer theory
Read some Judith Butler, Lauren Berlant, Jack Halberstam, James Baldwin, and if none of those authors pique your fancy, try to find someone who does. Learn about LGBT history and its intersection with race, class, and gender. If you are not a real book fan, there are plenty of Magazines or websites online, which keep you up to date about the past, the present and the future. Know who you are, fight for your rights but know who has fought for your right today!!!
Number 5: Drop the toxic people in your life
Your negative and gossiping friends, who are never satisfied with anything or anyone. Ironic sarcasm is fun, but it gets depressing after a while. Start surrounding yourself with positive people who encourage you to express yourself, and don’t judge you for being different. You want to live with good friends around you that make your life richer.
Number 6: Start to Treat Yourself
Besides saving some for the future, your world trip and lots more, you have to treat yourself once in a while. It can be small, it can be big, but make sure it satisfies you. Do something that relaxes you, a stress relief day, a good massage or a facial (LOL) It is not all about hard work and making money, it’s enjoying the pleasures of life right now.
Number 7: Explore your sexuality
There is more to sexuality than the genders you are or are not attracted to. Experience different types of connections, be it through unknown fetishes, multiple partners, toys, new positions, leather, or puppy play. If you’re unsatisfied with your sex life, you should try to figure out what does fulfill you this New Year.
Number 8: Add one consistent queer activity to your life
Join a sports league, a musical group, something with other queer men and women that is a constant in your life. Relate with guys and girls that could have the same interests or issues and a good shower after a sports event will always fresh up the team spirit and maybe your sex life. ;o)
Number 9: Go to that event you always wanted to attend
Folsom, Burning Man, Coachella, Gay Days Orlando, Milkshake Festival or Life Ball in Vienna. Set the date, buy your ticket and just do it. You won’t regret it and that experience nobody can take it away from you anymore.
Number 10: Break the hardest mentality: The grass is always greener on the other side
The grass is greener where you water it. Happiness comes from within. Yes, it’s cliché, but it’s a cliché for a reason. You always want what you don’t have or what you can’t get. It’s great to dream and fantasize, but you’re never going to be satisfied if you’re always looking at the grass on the other side. Start looking inward!!!
