Some kids played with Barbies, others played with Bratz, and many of those kids grew up to be queer. Now Bratz is recognizing its queer fans and celebrating self-expression, self-love, and the LGBTQ+ community by releasing the first-ever set of fashion dolls sold as a same-sex couple!
The all-new Pride collection is inspired by beloved Bratz characters and girlfriends Roxxi and Nevra, who came out as a couple for Pride 2020. Roxxi came out as a lesbian, and Nevra came out as bisexual in a post made on Bratz social media.
“We are so excited to introduce this collection because so many of the fans who made Bratz what it is are part of the LGBTQ+ community and this is a way to honor them,” Jasmin Larian, Bratz creative director and daughter of MGA Entertainment’s founder and CEO, Isaac Larian.
In addition to releasing these instantly iconic dolls, MGA Cares, the charitable arm of MGA Entertainment, is donating $25,000 to the Trevor Project.
The dolls are styled by famous out designer JimmyPaul, who not only combined his brand’s vibrancy and Bratz signature style, but also drew inspiration from the 1960s, when the LGBTQ+ movement was gaining momentum and getting national attention. Also, note the lesbian Pride socks on Roxxi.
“I hoped to infuse my personal flair and personal passion for my LGBTQ+ community into this collaboration,” Paul said. “The collection features bold and brave styles that I hope will resonate with fans and remind them to be their truest selves. This collaboration is a love letter to the LGBTQ community, many of whom have been inspired by Bratz since childhood to live their truth. My hope is that the collection brings a glimpse of hope and power and serves as a reminder of both the vibrancy of the community and the gravity of LGBTQ affairs today.”
