The Warwick Rowers, who have been producing sexy fundraising calendars since 2009, have decided they’d like to give something back to their fans — and have just launched Sports Allies, a program to reach out to young people challenged by bullying, homophobia or low self-esteem. We definitely got an eyeful on the project!
This is what the Warwick Rowers have to say:
“When we launched our first calendar in 2009, we had no idea that it would bring us so many new friends and supporters around the world. People who would not just help fund our sport but give us a way to put something back. In 2012 we decided to join the fight against homophobia, and were moved by your response. Now we are building on that response through Sport Allies, a program to reach out to young people challenged by bullying, homophobia or low self-esteem.
We have created Sport Allies in partnership with support from senior sports figures like double 
Olympian and World Medallist rower Tom Solesbury and world-leading professional services company EY. The organization is being led by a Management Committee that combines university student perspectives with the experience of established professionals from the worlds of media, charity, banking and law. The Management Committee aims to lead Sport Allies to becoming a fully-independent registered charity in 2015”.
They are currently undertaking a far-reaching review of the research into homophobia in sport and its impact on the development of young people. Below, celebrated actor Sir Ian McKellen puts himself in the hands of the Warwick Rowers at the launch of the 2015 calendar at the May Fair Hotel in London. The event also gave Sport Allies an opportunity to highlight key findings from its upcoming report on the impact of homophobia in sport on the development of young people.
