This movement for LGBT civil rights, aired on LOGO on the 29th of June. Australian pop star Sia performed her hit song ‘Chandelier’ with a little help from New York City’s Gay Men’s Choir and a shirtless male dancer. Sia was performing at US TV network Logo’s special called Trailblazers, which honored the pioneers of the LGBTI community in a star-filled ceremony shown on TV. The song saw the choir wear blonde bob wigs to imitate her famous hairstyle. Sia, who identifies as bisexual, and the choir were also joined by a half-naked male dancer, Ryan Heffington, who choreographed the music video to the song.

Trans billboard campaign launched in Chicago!!!
The first of 10 billboards highlighting transgender rights was unveiled in Chicago. TransLife Center at the Chicago House — in conjunction with Camp Firebelly — jointly launched the campaign in West Garfield Park, unveiling a bright pink billboard that reads: “She’s Just Walking Not Working.” The campaign is the work of a 10-day design intensive program that pairs young designers of Camp Firebelly with non-profit organisations, free of charge. The campaign aims to call attention to trans rights and the numerous incidences of trans individuals being arrested under the misguided assumption that they are sex workers. The TransLife Center provides legal services, job training, shelter, and meals to members of the transgender community in Chicago that are struggling.

Australia: Sydney Opera House hosts festival celebrating queer Indigenous culture.
Sydney Opera House is to hold a three day festival this week to celebrate queer identities in Australia’s Aboriginal community. Events ranging from talks to films and cabaret performances will take place from 4-6 July, as part of the country’s annual NAIDOC Week (an acronym taken from the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee). The program aims to explore the queer identities which have always been a part of the native culture, and are not a result of western influences. LGBT rights are slowly increasing in Australia, and discrimination is being fought on all sides.

In 1993, the Lesbian Avengers sponsored the first Dyke March in Washington, DC. The tradition moved to New York City and for 22 years women have taken the streets of Manhattan, the day before the official gay pride parade. The Dyke March has been sponsor free and a space for women to be out and proud. It’s anti-commercial. It’s just us,’ says a city resident. ‘We are standing more for what happened at Stonewall than the regular march. They kind of got away from it. We are grassroots. We do this every year and we’re mighty. We are asserting our strength and that we are all together. And we rule”. The march is not supported by corporate dollars, nor do organizers apply for a permit.

A record number of 26,000 people turned up at Singapore’s sixth Pink Dot rally on Saturday night to celebrate the ‘freedom to love’.
Singapore’s Speakers Corner turned a sea of glittering pink with a bright outline of a heart within the dot formation, at about 8pm. Pink Dot organizers said in a statement that the rally this year marks a coming of age for the movement that has championed inclusivity and diversity amid an increasingly volatile social landscape. ‘It is very heartening to see the dot growing year on year,’ said spokesperson Paerin Choa referring to the attendance this year being more than ten times the number of the inaugural 2009 event and an increase from an estimated 21,000 people last year.’We believe that this sends a strong message of love and acceptance, affirming that Singapore is a home for one and all, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are, at the end of the day, one big national Family, and it is especially humbling this year, to see the sheer support we have received from Singaporeans from all walks of life.’
