Yesterday was the first International Asexuality Day (IAD) that took place on April 6th 2022. What does this actually mean? IAD is a coordinated worldwide campaign promoting the ace umbrella, including demisexual, grey-asexual and other ace identities.
The four themes of IAD are:
- Advocacy
- Celebration
- Education
- Solidarity
These themes highlight the aims of recognising and enabling the work that the international ace community and organisations do, particularly in non-Western and/or non-English speaking countries.
Why do we need International Asexuality Day?
The day is designed to complement other ace events like Ace Week (the last week in October), but with a special emphasis on the international community, going beyond the English-speaking and Western sphere that has so far had the most coverage.
The day can also serve as a focal point for giving asexuality some visibility in the first half of the year, useful for countries for which theend of October (Ace Week) is a difficult time of year for ace advocacy.
IAD is a collaborative project with ace organisations and advocates from:
• Poland • Romania • Russia • Spain • Trinidad & Tobago • United Kingdom • Dominican Republic • France • Germany • India • Ireland • Italy • Japan • Mauritius • Mexico • The Netherlands • Arabic Speaking Countries • Argentina • Australia • Austria • Brazil • Chile • Colombia • Costa Rica • Czech • Denmark
