2017 has begun already which also makes it time again for the search of a new Mister Gay Belgium. The twelve contestants for 2017 are known for the public and introduced at the Press Event in February. They are eager to take over the reign and title of Mister Gay Belgium 2016 Raf Van Puymbroeck. They have their own message to bring out to the world and will show why they should be named as Mister Gay Belgium 2017 at the 27th of May in Antwerp. Time again like every year for PINK IN OUR LIVES to put all candidates separately in the spotlight and give a taste of who they are. We have met them all and they are a fine and friendly group of guys and the seventh candidate of this series of interviews will be Alan Roelants.
Alan Roelants is 23 years old, Bar owner and is living in Antwerp. He did his coming out in 2009 and his project is about “LGBT people with a child wish”.
What is the reason you joined this election of Mister Gay Belgium?
“I entered the Mister Gay Belgium competition, because I want to be a voice for all beginning LGBT 
families. The law about surrogacy in Belgium has not a single official written letter on paper, which I find very disturbing around this time of the year 2017. Somehow there is still an ethical taboo around LGBT people who want to have children and that has to stop. We must draw a line under all taboos around the LGBT community and make sure we have better laws in our society.”
To whom did you do your first coming out and how?
“I told through 3 letters that I was “different” to the other guys in my class. My mother, sister and 
brother got at the same time a letter that I had hidden for them, but knew they were gonna find it. After that I went out our house walking around till hours later I got the message from my mother and sister that even though I like boys, they still love me.”
What does the Gay Pride mean for you and do we still need such a parade these days?
“We are still not where we should be, so YES!!! Off course the Gay Pride is still necessary. I see it as a holiday for the LGBT community, where we all come together to celebrate ourselves. Our predecessors have fought so hard for us, we have to continue their and our legacy with a clear stand of view and voice.”
What features/personality does your ideal man has to have and like which hunk does he have to look like?
“A well-groomed man with or without a beard can always ring at my door. For Ryan Gosling is my 
door always wide open!!! He is for me a real hunk and the way he is with his kids, I think he would also be a perfect father figure.”
What advice would you give to young gays that did not come out of the closet yet?
“Talk about your feelings. There is nothing more important to be honest to yourself. Find someone in 
your close environment, even though it is only one person to tell your story, and a burden falls of your shoulder. When I look to my coming out, talking and music helped me a lot.”
