2017 has begun already which also makes it time again for the search of a new Mister Gay Belgium. The twelve contestants for 2017 are known for the public and introduced at the Press Event in February. They are eager to take over the reign and title of Mister Gay Belgium 2016 Raf Van Puymbroeck. They have their own message to bring out to the world and will show why they should be named as Mister Gay Belgium 2017 at the 27th of May in Antwerp. Time again like every year for PINK IN OUR LIVES to put all candidates separately in the spotlight and give a taste of who they are. We have met them all and they are a fine and friendly group of guys and our twelfth and last candidate of this series of interviews will be Jaimie Deblieck.
Jaimie Deblieck is 18 years old, Studying Horticulture and is living in Roeselare (West-Flanders). He did his coming out in 2013 and his project is about “Acceptation of LGBT people on the workfloor”.
What is the reason you joined this election of Mister Gay Belgium?
“There is still a lot of work for acceptance and stopping discrimination towards the LGBT community. Unfortunately we still don’t have the same rights that we deserve and won’t we be accepted of who we are. With my participation at this election I want to end the taboos around LGBT people. Fighting for our rights that we also need like every other person in this world.”
To whom did you do your first coming out and how?
“A girlfriend of mine came out at school as bisexual and for some reason I had the urge to talk to her. I started asking questions like “ how long did you struggle with it” and ”were you not afraid that people are gonna hate or reject you?”. Her answer was proudly; “ it doesn’t matter what people think of me, I am who I am and I am damn proud of it”. Behind those words I felt I could say that I am Gay! Because of all those stress and emotions, I directly put a status update on Facebook where I shared my coming out. But with all these emotions I forgot to tell my mother, so she also found out through Facebook.
What does the Gay Pride mean for you and do we still need such a parade these days?
“Gay Pride means 3 things for me:
- Coming up for your rights
- Not afraid to go on the street without being ashamed of who you are
- Partying HARD!!!
And YES it is more than necessary and important. Like I said we have to fight for our rights!!!”
What features/personality does your ideal man has to have and like which hunk does he have to look like?
“My ideal man has to be romantic, stylish, full of energy and shorter than me. He also has to have a good sense of humor, adventurous, someone who wants to see the whole world with me! I have a weakness for blond guys. He can also say out loud what he wants, but for the rest I am not that picky!.”
What advice would you give to young gays that did not come out of the closet yet?
“The advice I would give is don’t stay too long in the dark, small closet and dare yourself to be in the beautiful rainbow world! Be proud of who you are and know that there are always people who appreciate, take care of you and respect you regardless of your sexual preference.”
