Oscars-2013

This year will be held the 85th Academy Award Ceremony called the Oscars on the 24th of February 2013. And it has a lot of PINK in it. Not only are there a lot gay connections, but the Oscars will include a special celebration of movie musicals of the last ten years.

How GAY can it get? 😉

010913_OscarsLogoABCReasons why the Oscars are often mentioned as a gay event;

THE GLAMOUR!!! THE A-LIST STARS!!! THE AFTER PARTIES!!!!

These are just three of the many reasons the Academy Awards are often jokingly referred to as “the gay man’s Super Bowl.” Indeed, there are few annual events we look forward to as much as Oscar night, though many of us confess to watching as passionate for the haute couture as we do for the awards themselves. The Academy has a history of honoring actors’ portrayals of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) characters (from Hilary Swank in “Boys Don’t Cry” to Charlize Theron in “Monster” to Sean Penn in “Milk”). pink-oscar Last year 2012 had also a lot of Pink In it with Christopher Plummer up for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of an elderly gay man battling terminal cancer in “Beginners”. Even Hollywood hunks George Clooney (nominated for “The Descendants”) and Brad Pitt (nominated for “Moneyball”) have been outspoken in their support of marriage equality in that year on the Oscars. Let’s also not forget Glenn Close’s spellbinding turn as a woman living as a man in 19th century Ireland in the movie “Albert Nobbs.”

But this year in 2013 the Academy Award nominees have their own share of gay backstory, if not in terms of orientation, then in history. Many of the actors have formerly played gay roles and some films even had gay characters or situations in them.

Let’s check them out:

2005_capotePHILLIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN THE MASTER.

THE MASTER: Returning from Navy service in World War II, Freddie Quell (Joaquin Phoenix) drifts through a series of PTSD-driven breakdowns. Finally he stumbles upon a cult, which engages in exercises to clear emotions. He becomes deeply involved with them. TheMaster2012-PosterArtAfter returning from the Second World War, having witnessed many horrors, a charismatic intellectual creates a faith-based organization in an attempt to provide meaning to his life. He becomes known as “The Master”. His right-hand man, a former drifter, begins to question both the belief system and The Master as the organization grows and gains a fervent following.

This chameleon Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays here a cult leader in The Master, but in 2005 he transformed into the light-voiced gay author Truman Capote, who faced his own demons while writing In Cold Blood.

angleeANG LEE NOMINATED FOR BEST DIRECTOR fFOR THE MOVIE LIFE OF PI.

LIFE OF PI: Based on the best-selling novel by Yann Martel, is it a magical adventure story centering on Pi Patel, the precocious son of a zookeeper. Dwellers in Pondicherry, India, the family decides to move to Canada, hitching a ride on a huge freighter. After a shipwreck, Pi is found adrift in the Pacific Ocean on a 26-foot lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, all fighting for survival.

Ang Lee achieved gay fame for two of his earlier contributions,Brokeback_mountain the 1993 comedy The Wedding Banquet and of course 2005’s Brokeback Mountain with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger.

(You should watch The Wedding Banquet (got nominated for Best Foreign Film in 1993) and read the Annie Proulx short story Brokeback Mountain to enjoy all the rich language and backstory missing from Lee’s adaptation)

LINCOLN NOMINATED FOR BEST PICTURE.

lincoln-daniel-day-lewisABRAHAM LINCOLN: a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.Tony_Kushner_

Yes, yes… the real-life Abraham Lincoln might have been gay or bi or whatever, but we know for a fact that the screenwriter for the film Lincoln is definitely gay. His name is Tony Kushner and he also wrote Angels in America, a Pulitzer-prize winning movie that is a must-read for anyone interested in HIV and closeted Mormons. This screenplay has come out as a book, movie and a play in many countries over the world.

Hugh-JackmanHUGH JACKMAN NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN LES MISERABLES.les-miserables-poster04

LES MISERABLES: A musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel about a recently-released prisoner named Jean Valjean struggling to survive during the French revolution

wolverine_jackman_660He is famous for his role as Wolverine in the X-men series. But long before Hugh Jackman stole a loaf of bread as Jean Valjean in the movie musical Les Miserables, he played the lead role in the gay Broadway musical The Boy From Oz and showed that he could act and sing!!! jackman.jpgThe gay rumours started of course that he was in the closet and the rumours kept following him and his wife continuously. She always laughed  them off, but after been married to him for almost 17 years now , she is now getting annoyed with those accusations and who can blame this lucky woman….But we can keep on dreaming off course LOL

the masterJOAQUIN PHOENIX NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN THE MASTER.

A few years before Joaquin Phoenix appeared in The Master, he grew a beard, appeared on David Letterman and incoherently declared his intention to quit acting and pursue a hip-hop career.

The completely transparent stunt was turned into a completely masturbatory “documentary” called “I’m Still Here” that contains more male frontal nudity than you’d find in some gay porn films… so there’s that and it makes you go surfing and searching on the internet, didn’t you? ;o)

ParanormanPARA-NORMAN NOMINATED FOR BEST ANIMATED FEATURE.paranorman

Para-norman: A small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman, who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he’ll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst, of all, grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.paranorman8

Whether or not Para-Norman scores an Academy Award, it still scored a huge first by presenting an openly gay and likable jock named Mitch. This is a first and a landmark achievement for gay visibility in children’s animated movies to represent a character like this.

lincolnposterDANIEL DAY LEWIS NOMINATED FOR BEST ACTOR IN ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

Daniel Day Lewis did not explore the former president’s rumored homosexuality. But in the 1985 British movie My Beautiful Laundrette, Daniel Day Lewis did explore gay love as a street punk who falls for a Pakastani laundromat owner. Things gets arousing near the end of the film and made Daniel more well-known for the gay community as an actor.

MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE: Omar, the son of a Pakistani journalist, asks a job to his enterprising Uncle Nasser. danieldaylewisWhen he brings home the drug dealing son of Nasser called Salim , they are attacked by a gang of right-wing extremists. Between them sees Omar his old childhood friend Johnny. Omar and Johnny take their old friendship back on. Omar wants to start a laundry building with the money from Salim’s drug transactions and the support of Nasser, whose daughter Tania he asks to marry him. The enterprise is undermined, however, by attacks of the punks and the lies about the nature of Omar’s relation to Johnny.

BRAVE NOMINATED FOR BEST ANIMATED FEATURE.

brave02BRAVE: Set in Scotland in a rugged and mythical time, “Brave” features Merida, an aspiring archer and a daughter of royalty. Merida makes a reckless choice that unleashes unintended peril and forces her to spring into action to set things right. She is a Scottish princess, whose interests include archery and horse riding. She is told by her mother that her interests are not what a princess should be doing and that she has to marry. But Merida chooses to defy her mother. And when she and her mother have an argument Merida rides off and meets a witch. She asks for a spell to change her mother. And the witch gives her a cake which she gives to her mother but the change is not what she was hoping for. So she tries to find a way to fix it….. brave

Last but not least Disney’s Brave had a lot of  rapid-fire jokes throughout the film, so you probably missed the raven’s gay aside about a prince who looked good in tight pants…..LOL. That doesn’t make the raven definitely gay, but it certainly means that he spent a second admiring a guy’s butt… This is a first-time admission for a male Disney cartoon character. Heading in the right direction for Disney movies in 2013 ;o).
