The latest series from Darren Star (Emily in Paris, Younger) and Jeffrey Richman (Emily in Paris) explores dating as a gay man of a certain age who’s been in a committed relationship for decades but is suddenly single. Uncoupled, premiering on Netflix July 29, stars Neil Patrick Harris as Michael, who discovers a few new things about himself while navigating the world of dating apps, GRINDr, and how to take the perfect profile pic for hook-ups.
The series costars Tuc Watkins as his partner, Tisha Campbell as a fellow real estate agent and Michael’s best friend, Suzanne Prentiss; Marcia Gay Harden as Claire Lewis, a wealthy art collector and soon-to-be divorcee who bonds with Michael; Emerson Brooks as Billy Jackson, a TV personality who is friends with Michael; and Julie & Julia’s Brooks Ashmanskas as Stanley James, an art dealer who is a close friend of Michael’s.
Uncoupled synopsis: “Michael Lawson (Neil Patrick Harris) seems to have it all figured out. He’s a successful New York City real estate agent with a great career, a supportive family, close friends, and a loving relationship with his partner of 17 years, Colin (Tuc Watkins). But when Colin unexpectedly moves out on the eve of his 50th birthday, Michael is completely blindsided. Overnight, he has to confront two nightmares: losing the man he thought was his soulmate, and suddenly finding himself a single gay man in his mid-forties in New York City.”
Judging from the trailer, the series promises to see Harris’s Michael in various states of undress in sexual scenarios, or just taking a pic for his Grindr profile.
“I’m so glad that I’m doing a show like this now because I was less concerned and conscientious then I probably would’ve been 10, even five years ago,” Harris said. “…I was glad that I wasn’t just the punch line of the joke when I was in bed with some 28-year-old hot guy.”
