Nick is 21 years old and lives in Eeklo (East-Flanders). He is a male nurse (family care). He did his coming out in 2011 and his concept for Mister Gay Belgium is about “LGBT people wanting children”.
How did u find about this election and what does Mister Gay Belgium for you?
“I found out about this election in 2015 when Skelte won. It was everywhere. From that moment on I knew that i wanted to participate. I waiting a few years until I felt comfortable enough to show my true self to the LGBTQIA+ community. The fact that Mister Gay Belgium exists means the world to me, just like it does to many other gay men. It gives us power, a voice, it gives us a platform where we can show who we are and what we can achieve”.
What does your campaign stands for and how will u bring your message known to the outside world?
“My campaign is about people from the LGBTQIA + community who want to have a child. In Belgium, the options are limited and the procedures are often long-winded. I want to focus most on the statutes that parents get during an adoption process. I want to elaborate my campaign by hearing personal stories, obtaining accurate figures and demonstrating that a change has to be made”.
To whom did you do your first coming out and how?
“I had my first boyfriend when I was 15 and told this to a friend. Her sister had been a couple with my brother for several years. My friend told her sister, her sister told my brother, my brother told my other brother and my other brother told my sister. My sister then said it to my mother. I didn’t have to do anything. The day after that I posted it on Facebook and the rest is history”.
What advice would you give to young gays that did not come out of the closet yet?
“Do it when you are ready and when you feel safe. Coming out of the closet is an intense and life-changing experience. Do not feel obliged to do it. When you decide to leave the closet, we will be here, to support you, to lift you up. You are part of an loving and accepting community”.
Who is your superhero at the moment and why?
“Black Panther. Not for what he can do or for what he does, but for what message this character and this movie will bring to so many people from the black community. Finally, a blockbuster where it is not just the typical white cast. Recognition. That is why he is my favorite superhero”.
How do u feel that there still countries like Indonesia, where it is illegal to kiss somebody of the same-sex, let alone be gay?
“Incomprehensible. The fact that I grew up in the western world, in a country where homosexuals can marry since 2003, first spun a haze in front of my eyes. I saw this as self-evident and thought that this was the same everywhere. It was not until I got older and I saw how much inequality, how much hatred, discrimination and physical violence were exerted on homosexual men and women. Only then did I see how wrong this is. It is their culture, I understand that, I will not go into that but the world has so many highly educated leaders who can make a significant difference in this issue. It’s 2018, time to wake up”.
