In a Double Dare first, the iconic 1990s Nickelodeon game show featured a family with two dads on last week’s episode and they called themselves the Double Dads.
The show’s new host, Liza Koshy, introduced dads Liberty and Bryan and their adopted children Oscar and Marcos.
“Let’s meet our teams, in Blue, we have Oscar and Marcos and their dads Liberty and Bryan. They love football and they love each other. They are team ‘Double Dads,’ ” said Koshy. “That’s right! It’s about time we had double dads on Double Dare.”
The dads revealed they adopted their sons six years ago and that one daddy goes by “Dad” and the other by “Papa.” While it may not seem like that big of a deal for some, it gives kids watching the show who haven’t had the opportunity to meet same-sex families in real life the opportunity to understand a little better that they’re really just like any other family.
The beloved Nickelodeon game show, which was revived for its third run earlier this year, always features two families competing in an array of challenges, including trivia, obstacle courses, and messy stunts (every 90s kid remembers the slime). But prior to this episode, there hadn’t yet been a family with same-sex parents on the show.
We hope this is one of those things that won’t be a big deal soon to mention, but right now I think it’s worth noting!!! It has to be one of the first real-life examples of same-sex families on kids’ TV.
