Tom of Finland was born on May 8, 1920 in Finland as Touko Laaksonen. He died on November 7, 1991 in Helsinki, Finland. He loved art, literature and music. But he loved those outdoors men even more. At the age of five, Touko began to spy on a neighbor, a muscular, stomping farmboy whose name, “Urho”, means “hero”. Urho was the first in a long line of heroes to hold Tom’s attention while he memorized every flex of their lean muscles, every humorous twist of their full lips. This he draws secretly for himself until at the end of 1956, at the urging of a friend, Touko sent his secret artwork to a popular American muscle magazine, but, being cautious in those paranoid times, and anyway thinking that “Touko Laaksonen” was too tough a name for American tongues, he signed them, “Tom”. The editor loved them. The cover of the Spring 1957 issue of “Physique Pictorial” features a laughing lumberjack, drawn by “Tom of Finland”. It was a sensation. Touko became Tom of Finland. Despite his steady growth in popularity from there on, his first public exhibition did not occur until 1973, in Hamburg, Germany. The rest is history.Touko is a pioneering erotic artist and gay icon. He is widely believed to be the first gay artist to steer away from effeminate characters and focus his art on images of strong and masculine men.
