If you read our last movie review of “Call Me By Your Name” by Christiaan, then you know what to expect of this new review of “GODS OWN COUNTRY”. We will promote or let you know which LGBTI movies you have to see by our choice and for several reasons. Some have a beautiful story, some have the best sex-scenes, some have the right message for you. It doesn’t matter why you watch, but we need more movies with LGBT characters and stories to show the word we all need love and passion too and that is nothing wrong with two same-sex characters to fall in love or live their lives. Our reporter Christiaan fell in love with this movie and couldn’t wait to share his thoughts and views about it with our readers:
“One year ago, the movie “Gods own Country” was already spoken about in the press as being…the “new” Brokeback Mountain….!!!!
Well, let me say one thing; this certainly isn’t, a re-take from the outstanding movie based on the novel by Annie Proulx. (Although the storyline seems to be similar.)
But needless to say that this is a wonderful movie. Because it IS!!! This movie stands on its own. The synopsis speaks about two guys that fall in love, while guarding sheep in the cold fields of Yorkshire. Besides that, NO links with BrokeBack Mountain.
The story starts in Yorkshire GB with Johnny (played by Josh o’Connor) a sheep farmers son, who lives with his sick father after suffering a stroke and there is also (grand)mother who takes care of the both of them .
At a certain moment his father hires extra help for the lambing season, Gheorghe a (can we say VERY handsome) Romanian migrant worker( played by Alec Secareanu).
Johnny can’t stop Gheorghe calling him names like “Gypsy..”etc. and at a certain moment they start fighting…rolling around and there is the first physical contact. (That one-liner from Mister G…”I know what you are doing…..I will fuck with you!!”) Bammm.
The turning point in the movies arrives when at the early mornings on the hill, they start wrestling again, anybody with a mud/farmer fetish….you’ll love this. The roughness is so intimate! Gheorghe his peach is being shown for the first time…bootie-call. But it stays with “just” a local oral intervention.
Eventually while the movie continues, we see the bonding between the guys and balanced influence from Gheorghe to Johnny. He “feeds” him, helps with the lambs giving birth, shows him what life is about. But the most important lesson from this movie is, Gheorghe makes Johnny feel, by opening up to him, loved. He struggles with his feelings towards Gheorghe and for the first time he feels real love, not the one night jerks and fucks he had before. (By the way…..The look on his face while Gheorghe changes a orphan lamb into a surrogate lamb.) Priceless!
While spooning together that night and after the first kiss, they make love. That scene is so pure!
Sadly the father from Johnny suffers a second stroke, and becomes hospitalized. The responsibility of the farm rests on Johnnies shoulder now, while his father slowly recovers at the hospital. Not going to sell the whole movie here darlings, just go out and see it!!!
I Can say this; some fairytales do have happy endings.
The movie reminded me a bit of series “Eastender”s. Due to the semi-dark filtering, and rough Yorkshire landscape scenery, one can feel the coldness.
Credits for Francis Lee, the director who was the master of creating this intimate atmosphere. Although there are not that many dialogues, it has a certain depth, a roughness. Father/Son tensions etc. Many close ups as if being the room itself or at the cold fields with the sheep. This could be something happening to any gay farmer son, or whoever you are! Love. Pure love.
While writing my article, just did a simple Google slash Wiki on Awards for this movie and BOY did it get Awards, so well deserved. To name a few….Best British Independent Awards, the main Award, Best Actor, Best supporting actor.
Chicago International Film Award, Silver Q Hugo Award. The Edinburgh Film Festival The Michael Powell Award for Best British Feature Film. And many, many more to come! So this movie is certainly a blockbuster. For everybody who hasn’t seen it, go see it at your local cinema or buy the movie”.
