A BITE OUT OF OUR PINK WORLD www.pinkinourlives.com
βGothamβ star Cory Michael Smith came out as gay as he
talked about his role as Adrian in the touching film, β1985.β The coming out film is all about a young man with AIDS named Adrian, who heads home to Texas for the holidays, which might be his last because of the disease.
When βTHE DAILY BEASTβ met Adrian, his partner has recently died of
AIDS. He himself is sick. They watched his pilgrimage, leaving his community in New York City for his family home in Texas, and perhaps expect to see a coming out story. But in many ways, Writer-director Yen Tan says, β1985β is a film about not coming out. Thereβs an added layer to the tragedy: the desire to be truly known by the people you love, especially before your death. And the emotional burden you carry when they donβt”.
That notion in particular struck Cory Michael Smith, who plays Adrian in the film. The 31-year-old actor, who has starred in HBOβs Olive Kitteridge miniseries, Broadway (baring it all)
and best known for playing Edward Nygma, aka The Riddler, on Foxβs βGothamβ.
βThereβs something special about telling a story that feels closer to home,β Smith, who identifies as queer, tells The Daily Beast. βIβm not exactly like The Riddler in real life. βIβm from Middle America,β he says. βIβm from Ohio. Iβve been living here in New York for a while, and there are stretches when I donβt see my family often. Going home and that whole charade is very familiar. The first family dinner after a while. Coming out to a family, the fear of that.β
Cory says his own family handled his coming out with βa lot of love,β though it took βa lot of time, before he mustered up the courage to do so.
Smith is known for playing the Riddler, in the Fox show
βGotham.β His character has a long-standing feud against Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), also known as the Penguin. But in Season 4, the two former-friends-turned-enemies will be back in each otherβs lives. In fact, they might even be working together.
βThe Riddler and the Penguin come back into each otherβs lives, and itβs a really, really great moment. And itβs
unexpected; I donβt think people will expect the way this happens,β Taylor told TV Line about their union. βIt also kind of shows one of my favorite things about the show, which is that these characters take the lessons and the experiences of the past and they change and they grow and they evolve, as the years go on.β
We look forward seeing more of Cory and welcome to the club cutie pie.
