The Good Place” actress Jameela Jamil (33) came out as “queer” yesterday on Twitter after addressing a backlash started by tran-actress Trace Lysette over Jamil’s involvement in “Legendary,” an upcoming HBO Max ballroom competition show.
Critics didn’t like it when Tuesday was announced that Jamil the MC and one of the judges is of ‘Legendary’, a dance off in the tradition of ballroom houses in New York during the ‘80s and ‘90s. The Ballroom scene, that got a lot of attention again because of the great show “POSE”, is a part of the LGBTQ-community.
The drama started when “Transparent” trans-actress Trace Lysette criticized the decision to hire someone who was not part of the culture. Trace tweeted: “I interviewed for this gig. As the mother of a house for nearly a decade it’s kind of mind blowing when ppl with no connection to our culture gets the gig. This is not shade towards Jameela, I love all that she stands for. If anything I question the decision makers”.
Yesterday the actress reacted on twitter; “I know that my being queer doesn’t qualify me as ballroom, but I have the privilege and power and a large following to bring to this show, its beautiful contestants and ballroom hosts’.
When a follower asked if she came out of the closet with this she answered that she never made a secret about her sexuality. ‘I kept it low because I was scared of the pain of being accused of performative bandwagon jumping, over something that caused me a lot of confusion, fear and turmoil when I was a kid.” Jamil said.
“But twitter is cruel and that is why I have not done it officially. It is not easy to be accepted in my culture. (Her Father is from India and her Mother is from Pakistan) I do not come out of a family, where somebody is open about this”.
“This is absolutely not the way how I wanted to come out of the closet. I will stay away from this app a while, because I don’t like to read any negative comments. Please keep your thoughts for yourself”.
It is not clear what part of the community she identifies with as of this posting. What do you think of her post?
