At the end of July MilkShake Festival is back in Amsterdam for a whole weekend on the 28th and 29th July 2018. Like the other years we look forward to it again and enjoy a weekend of music, dancing, fun and being ourselves!!!Time to have a quick chat with Sinan who is the PR Manager for Milkshake Festival to tell us why you should definitely be there next weekend!
Great talking to you. In a few days is the last weekend of July and this means MILKSHAKE time again. ? What can the party people expect differently this year against the last few years?
“Just like every year everything is on another place. Also we have a new area on the left side when you enter. Just keep walking left and you will discover a mini festival in a festival 😛 New this year is a wonderful organization called Pornceptual from Berlin. It’s all about artistic sexuality, self exploration and eroticism. Take off your clothes at their coat check inside and enjoy”. ?
How did you get involved with Milkshake and how did it all happen?
“I’ve known Marieke, the creator of the festival, for 20 years. We’ve been involved in projects together as long as we can remember. For the first three years I did the styling and entertainment on the Supertoys stage at Milkshake. I guess it was just a matter of time and opportunity that she asked me to join her in the office. We are very ‘nsync with each other, we can talk without words. Everything fits like puzzle pieces and I guess the festival is an extension of who we are and all the people we’ve worked with the past 20 years”.
Which party concept or event is your dream/wish to get at Milkshake in the future?
“Susanne Bartsch from NY and Maricasmaricas from Spain”.
Besides Milkshake you do a lot of other work and projects. Can you tell us more about yourself and what you do?
“I just turned 40 and live in Rotterdam, which I will never leave. I love that city. My origins are Turkish, growing up with two cultures gave me an advantage of having a wider eye. My background lies in film and photography. I do a lot visuals for clubs and parties like NOW&WOW and Café D’Anvers which give me a lot of creative joy. This together with photography is something I will never stop doing”.
Milkshake has also grown and evolved in one day to a whole weekend the last three years. Saturday has more straight people partying and Sunday mostly the LGBT Community. Do you think there is a reason for it or…?
“It’s not necessarily more straight on Saturday. We do a survey every year and since the beginning 30% of our guests are straight. I guess the people that come on Sunday are the true Milkshake fans that are hardcore enough to take the day off on Monday. We do see that Sunday attracts more people from Amsterdam and more creative and abstract crowd”.
Milkshake is bringing also a lot of Foreign people than only the Dutchies to Milkshake. Why do you think it is so popular that people come all over from abroad?
“Yeah we sold in 66 countries this year! There are big gay waterpark festivals in the south of Europe for instance, but these are more male focused with one sound of music. I remember one of my best friends from Japan came to Milkshake and hew was so surprised and in awe. He screamed at the end of day 1: It’s not about cruising! I can just be me and be happy!
We do our best to protect that essence. Milkshake is a safe place where simply you just can be, without stress, the machoness of the circuit scene or the political pink triangle. It’s a celebration of who we are”.
Other new and progressive stuff at Milkshake is the Food and Plastic change! The foodtrucks and stands will be without meat (You probably find something else to bite in LOL), but with various substitutes you can still fulfill your appetite. Also in 2020 soft plastic won’t be allowed anymore at festivals. So they decided to beat it to the punch. Environmental awareness is increasingly spreading throughout the world and together we all need to turn our planet into a fantastic, sustainable green world to live in. This year, they are taking a major step in making Milkshake as sustainable as possible. They have invested in hard plastic drinking cups to keep Milkshake waste free.
Milkshake festival is a dance festival that has been created from the thought ‘nothing should be a must, anything is possible’. Milkshake festival shows that entertainment, taste in music, choice of clothing and status has nothing to do with sexuality. Life is just a party thanks to the great diversity of skin colors, religions, sexual preferences and male and female forms. Milkshake wants to celebrate the city’s initiatives and is an impetus to bring courtesy and friendly manners back into society. Thick, thin, small, large, gay, straight, trans, black or white: people are the salt of the earth and this is what we celebrate and we are glad that we with PINK IN OUR LIVES can be a part of it!!!
