Obviously, there will be no grand pride parade in Antwerp this year due to coronavirus COVID-19. But Antwerp Pride does provide a photo walking route. It is also called upon to do ‘everything’ in pride outfit on Saturday, August 8. And on AntwerpPride.TV there will be all kinds of programs, short films, documentaries, and live interventions.
“Pride is not only a party, but also a moment of reflection,” says Antwerp Pride chairman Bart Abeel. “Our mission Statement is always: Antwerp Pride commemorates and celebrates the long journey forwards acceptance and equal opportunities the LGBT+ community has made. A journey that continues, for acceptance is never a given and there is still exclusion, discrimination and violence against LGBT+ both in our country and abroad. By giving a platform to the many voices within our community we wish to empower our community, educate and sensitize the general public and build bridges between the many actors in our society. Entrepreneurs, the city council, the cultural world, NGO’s, academia…
Centerpiece in the many Pride events is the Pride Parade. Alongside the Parade we organize and/or welcome cultural, educational, activist, sportive… initiatives. We do this always from a positive, solution and common ground seeking approach. With great empathy towards all minorities and people at risk of exclusion. As a volunteer organization, we take great pride in building community throughout our events. Antwerp Pride originates from the LGBT+ community but actively seeks alliances with all people and organizations within the city that share our passion for a diverse, inclusive and engaged city. In doing so, Antwerp Pride has built an event that attracts thousands of people to the city every year”.
Antwerp In Rainbow Colors
Antwerp Pride calls for priding as much as possible during the festival, from 5 to 9 August. For example, by taking that pride outfit out of the closet on Saturdays, for example, for shopping, going to sports to visit friends or family.
Antwerp also calls on Pride to display rainbow flags. Our traders and Partners say they will make an extra effort this year.
Online Television Channel
Antwerp Pride will have a temporary online television channel. In addition to supplied content such as short films and documentaries, there will also be local reports, videos and lots of information about what to do during Antwerp pride.
In ‘Colors of Antwerp’ a team will make short city reports. says Krijn Jonckheere of Towel Media, who will run www.AntwerpPride.tv
Trail Of Stories
A photo walk ‘Trail Of Stories’ along the Pride Parade 2019-2020 shows thirteen special people who are/were a big part of our LGBT+ community in Antwerp.
QR codes will provide information on your tour and this tour you can do with your own group of friends from August the 5th.
Other amazing parts of this special Antwerp Pride 2020 edition are movies, guided tours, exhibitions and who does not love to have a big fun package in their lap!!!
Movies and shows
On August 4, Kinepolis will screen the film ‘Pride’ by Matthew Warchus from 2014.
On Wednesday, August 5, Open Air Theater Rivierenhof will show ‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’. With a drag show as well to entertain you with an evening of music, glitter and fun.
A week before Jazz Middelheim, the jazz festival wants to put on a burlesque show and of course you can also got to show temple Maskara to watch The Shining Divas entertain you with food and performances.
Guided tours, sports and pub crawl
Tanguy Ottomer, Silvia Terrenzio and Philippe Ng organize guided tours through Antwerp and will shown you more about Pride and LGBT+ in Antwerp. You will be surprised.
Your own Big and Fun Box
Antwerp Pride also provides a fun package that you can buy online or in the temporary shop that comes in the Stadsfeestzaal. This will, for example, include tickets for events for which you must reserve. Because in corona times places are limited everywhere and you have to book in advance.
Exhibition
In addition, there is an exhibition ‘Together’ in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA) from August 5 to September 6 and is also your end point of “Trail of Stories Walk”, so you can extend your time with Pride memories and viewings.
Human Rights Friday
Friday, August 7th is ‘Human Rights Friday’. This is curated by Het Roze Huis – çavaria Antwerp. Fleur Pierets receives and hosts the forum with Unia, Wel Jong Niet Hetero, Police Zone Antwerp, Belgian Youth Against Racism, and artist-activist Paul Harfleet. The documentary ‘Pride Is Protest’ by Marieke Dermul and Filip Tielens will be screened as well today.
